Katong has more barbershops per square foot than most neighbourhoods in Singapore have coffee shops. Walk down Joo Chiat Road on a Saturday and you’ll pass three within a hundred metres of each other, each with a queue of some length outside. So when a client asks us to name the best one, the honest answer is: it depends what you’re optimising for. Price, consistency, whether you can walk in without a booking app open twelve hours in advance, and whether the barber actually looks at your face shape before touching the clippers.
We spent time comparing six names that come up again and again in this part of Singapore, plus a couple that anchor the wider luxury end of the market for context. One of them, Artist Barber at Kinex Mall, kept coming out ahead on the things that matter for a regular haircut rather than a once-a-year occasion. Here’s how we got there.
Artist Barber — the neighbourhood option that doesn't feel like a compromise

The price list is where Artist Barber separates itself from a lot of the competition we looked at. A standard adult haircut runs $30, a fade with wash is $35, and a straight razor head shave is $35. Combination services go up from there — haircut plus beard trim plus wash comes to $55, and the most involved package, a haircut with colour shampoo and beard trim, sits at $80. A touch-up cut between full appointments is $10, which is a genuinely useful option most of the shops we looked at don’t bother offering. Right now, through 31 July 2026, anyone with a valid Kinex mall receipt gets 20 percent off all barber services, which is the kind of tenant-mall tie-in that only works when the shop is actually inside the mall rather than adjacent to it.
Beyond the price sheet, the shop runs a three-tier membership structure — Silver, Gold, Platinum — which is a step up from the walk-in-only model most heartland and mall barbershops use. It signals a business trying to build repeat relationships rather than just capture footfall, and for someone who wants the same barber cutting their hair every three to four weeks, that structure matters more than a flashy interior.
Service-wise, the shop covers the full range you’d expect: adult and student cuts, beard sculpting, traditional wet shaving, scalp treatments, and hair colouring in black or brown shampoo tones. Reviews published on the site itself, from customers named Kion, Brion, Wong and Tan, describe attentive, detail-oriented service and specifically call out beard shaping as a strength — though we should be upfront that these are testimonials the shop has chosen to publish rather than something we’ve pulled from an independent review platform.
That’s worth sitting with for a second: unlike Truefitt & Hill or The Fade House, which carry large, independently verifiable review counts on platforms like Fresha, Artist Barber doesn’t yet have a substantial third-party review trail on Google or Yelp that we could independently check. It’s a newer entrant in a crowded strip, and its track record is still being written. We also didn’t find any Reddit or Quora threads specifically discussing Artist Barber — the shop’s reputation right now lives mostly in its own testimonials and its Instagram and TikTok presence (@artistbarbersg, @artistbarber.sg), not yet in the wider public conversation the way some of its older neighbours do.

The catch is that it’s appointment-only, and the site itself notes service may be adjusted if you’re more than 10 to 15 minutes late — not the shop for someone who wants to duck in on a whim.

There’s a real claim to fame here: Truefitt & Hill traces back to 1805 in London and is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest barbershop, with a client list that has historically included the Duke of Edinburgh. The Singapore outpost at 9 Ann Siang Road opened in 2013 and charges around $83 for a haircut and shampoo. It’s a genuinely different experience — hot towels, a face massage, the whole theatre of it — but it’s also a trek from Katong, appointment-only, and roughly two and a half times the price of a standard cut at a Kinex Mall barbershop.

With outlets at North Canal Road, Palais Renaissance, Jewel Changi Airport, Marina Bay Sands and Duxton Road, Sultans of Shave has built genuine scale and calls itself Singapore’s top-rated luxury barbershop. Feedback we found was mixed rather than uniformly glowing — a Wanderlog review roundup for the Marina Bay Sands outlet includes both loyal praise for specific barbers like Alam and Ava, and a blunter complaint: one customer wrote it plainly wasn’t premium service and called it a rip-off. With multiple outlets and multiple barbers, the experience seems to depend heavily on who you get and which branch you walk into.

Kings Barber at Shaw Corner on Boon Teck Road has been running since 2015, stocks Lock Stock and Barrel grooming products as sole distributor, and uses Proraso for its shave services, with cuts starting at $38. Aggregated review summaries note the craftsmanship and relaxed atmosphere are consistently praised, though a few reviewers point out the interior décor doesn’t quite match the shop’s regal name — a small gap between branding and the room itself.
